Research Opportunities

We are seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to join our research group in the Computer Science Department at the University of Alabama. The available positions focus on advancing the fields of Adversarial Machine Learning (AML) and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), with applications in trustworthy and secure AI for cyber-physical systems, including autonomous systems, vehicular networks, and smart grids.
Ideal applicants will have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: adversarial machine learning, explainable AI, deep learning, trustworthy AI, privacy-preserving machine learning, and applied cryptography.

Requirements include:
  1. Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.

  2. Solid understanding of machine learning, with experience in deep neural networks (e.g., CNN, LSTM, GAN), adversarial attacks/defenses, and/or explainable AI techniques (e.g., SHAP, LIME, saliency maps).

  3. Familiarity with privacy-preserving machine learning (e.g., federated learning, differential privacy) and/or applied cryptography is a plus.

  4. Excellent English writing and verbal communication skills; competitive TOEFL and GRE scores are required for international applicants.

  5. Strong programming skills in Python (with libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, Scikit-learn) and experience with research-oriented software development.
